I hear from people all the time that my "hair color changed!"
I guess my DA icon is outdated but I like it so I'm not changing it. So here's a new ID incase you see me at a convention and want to recognize me.
I just got done driving over 2,000 miles across the country from Ohio to Boston to Hartford to nowhere-Pennsylvania to Chicago back home to Columbus.
I love New England. Part of me wants to live there. The mountains of Western Pennsylvania will always be home, it's where I grew up. And Chicago is worthy of its reputation as the crown jewel of the midwest.
And yet, I was glad to come back to Ohio yesterday. After growing up in the mountains, moving to Ohio was a shock. Everything was so flat and Columbus is a much smaller city in every sense of the word except actual milage than Pittsburgh.
I hated it at first but now, nearly 15 years later, it's home. I've even come to find the beauty in the flat farm land and the old, scattered barns that cross the landscape.
I have a lot of memories here, and Ohio will forever have a soft spot in my heart. Great people live here and Columbus is a city full of entrepreneurial, artistic creative spirit. We're the next Austin, Texas and we've already been making our mark on the country.
I found myself feeling defensive when New Englanders took potshots at Columbus after hearing that's where I was from. Hopefully I didn't let it show! But I'm not ashamed to live in the midwest. For the record, it's neither boring here, nor do I live ANYWHERE near Iowa. (There seemed to be some confusion over that...)
America is a giant, diverse nation. I love road tripping because I get to see so much more of the country than if I took a plane. I love our great cities, but we're a heck of a lot more than that.
Hey, long-time lurking Dreamer fan here. I never realized you lived in Ohio! (Which probably just shows how unobservant I am.) The hubs and I just decided to try to settle down here not too far from you, due to me going to back to college and graduating here. *waves*
Glad to hear you're back from your road trip safe and sound!
I've lived in the same place my whole life (right outside Philadelphia), but one day I'd like to move somewhere perhaps in New England or the mid-west! Those areas are the most enticing to me. I love PA and the northeast for it's terrain and weather. Though for some reason I've always had a strange interested in living in Ohio. I can't quite say why, since most people, like you said, describe the mid-west as "boring". I'm glad to hear someone testify that it's not. I've always kind of disliked taking jabs at someone because of where they're from. I've heard too many New Jersey jokes, etc.
Anyway, it's my dream one day to take a road trip around the country and eat only at diners! I want to experience all of the United States!
More importantly, I agree with your sentiment wholeheartedly. We live in a great country, indeed!!!
