Last time I was in to see my stylist, she wanted to put a crazy funky red color on my hair. It had been blond on top, so it was lighter than my natural color, and she said we could get a crazy bright red on account of that. I said bring it on. As she was working on it, she asked me if I had seen a show called "My Life as Liz" on MTV, because her hair is really similar to mine--crazy red and super funky. I said no, but she told me it was a really cute show, and that, as a comic book person, she thought I'd love it.

And I did.

There are only about 8 episodes in the entire season, but it is a really wonderful show about being an outsider in high school. There's a really great moment early in the season where she stands up in front of the whole school and sings "The Funeral" by Band of Horses. It's haunting and lonely and powerful all at the same time. I couldn't get it out of my head, and have rewatched that scene on YouTube about a kagillion times: [link]

This was painted in Photoshop, using a screen cap from that scene as reference. There are several things I've been itching to draw, but never have the time. Today I was in braces-induced misery again, and said "screw it!" and took a few hours to work on this. It's different than what I ordinarily do, but that's why it was fun.
