Here's the original drawing I did for the new Issue #6 cover. I asked a lot of people about this one. But... ~albonia saw it and said "why don't you rotate it 5 degrees? All the vertical lines make it really still."

I tried it out and loved it. It makes everything (in the final) seem just slightly off kilter, just like Bea's mental state. I also went through about a hundred expressions for Bea but liked the numb/zoned out/in another world blank-stare best.

Aside from the rotation, though, this drawing is pretty close to the final art.

I draw on Bristol board, 9 1/2" X 14". Then I scan it in, and do the rest on the computer. I use Photoshop. If you go into my gallery here on DeviantART, you can find a tutorial I did on my process. That's more thorough than any answer I could give you in a comment!

OOO i had a look at your tutorial is superb i keep looking over it and hoping to take it all on board. im looking forward to friday to your next update. i think my fiance has had enough of me going on about 'the dreamer' that everytime i talk about the characters he just switches off :blahblah: and all i get is 'yes dear!' 'thats lovely dear!' also reading it has really made me sit down and watch the history channels, my dad starts looking around the room and then looks at me as if to say 'what you doing down here? should you be upstairs on that flipping laptop?' (seen as im usually glued to it reading web comics galore!)

What size paper do you work on?
Random much? Sorry.
Meant to say: the "numb" look works perfectly here. And I've always loved Bea's hair. It's just so...shiny. And lovely.

Happy holidays.

I work on pages smaller than real comic book pages. I found I waste time working on full sized comic pages, because most of the detail disappears when you reduce it for the web. Likewise, I don't do it screen size, because it would look awful in print. So, to answer your question: 9 3/8" x 14".

And thanks! :D

Say, Lora, was that sketch intended to be for issue #5 (as written on it)??

Naw, this was always meant to be for Issue #6, but this was just a rough comp version of the cover that I sent out to some friends/fellow artists to get reactions/critiques before I took it to color. I had just grabbed the logo and issue counter from issue #5 and didn't bother to change it. ^^;

Wow, that was a smart tip...I'm going to have to remember that one!

Your style is fantastic...I just love how the tri-cornered hat Bea is clutching is surrounded by all the mundane minutia of modern life. It makes a great focal point for the mystery and wonder of her predicament!
