Next issue of The Dreamer brings with it some new characters, and the issue kicks off with this guy: Hercules Mulligan--John's dad, and Bea's uncle, the Broadway Theater Costume Designer. I've been waiting his entrance into the story for a long time now. Originally the graphic novel ended with his entrance (at the end of issue #6). But everytime I wrote that scene, it didn't work. In fact, the issue was supposed to end on a happy note: Hercules comes back from a business trip to New York City, and brings Bea a present. Then John comes over and Bea, Yvette and John spend the night watching reality TV, eating junk food, and having fun.
It... it wasn't working. First, Hercules kept coming off as a parent. But the whole idea behind him is that he's Bea's friend, and buddy, which is why she adores him--because he's not like a parent and she has such strained relations with her own parents. Second, the whole 'all is well' ending was just to please my publisher, who may or may not have done a 2nd volume of the graphic novel. They sort of wanted an 'ending' for the mini-series. But it just sucked. Third, the issue was just really loooooong at that point. I hit 25 pages in the script and Bea says "Maybe. Maybe it's not...." [link] This is when Hercules was supposed to enter. I reread the script to sort of see how it all flowed together, and how Hercules's entrance would work with that lead in and--crap! There it was. My ending. I had written it without realizing.
It was about as unresolved of an ending as you could get. But it was one of three graphic novels that will make up Act I and it /had/ to be unresolved.
So I shelved Hercules's entrance, had a mild disagreement with my editor about the "to be continued" ending and produced a pretty good issue I think. There wasn't an opportunity to bring Hercules back into the story until Issue #9. Bea and Ben visit him in his costume shop and all the sudden, there he was! Larger than life and exactly as I had envisioned him. He really gets his voice in just two pages (you can see exactly why Bea adores him and John avoids him). All he really needed was to be in his own environment. He's sort of one part Michael Kors, one part Gordon Ramsay.
Anyway, The Dreamer, my webcomic. [link] Issue #9--coming soon!
I love the fact that you've drawn a person that seems so simple, just like any average male head, and yet has so much personality! Now I can't wait for him to show up!
I'm way late on commenting on this because I'm just now going through my pile of messages. ;^^
I really, really like his design. I think it's the shiny belt buckle. xD
Maybe this guy? [link]
