My buddy Beau Smith asked me to send him some old funny strips I did for the comic we were working on together, Courting Fate. It was stuff from when I was in art school. When I went to pull them out, I found this drawing. I don't know the exact date for it, but I would guess that it was probably from 2001.
I had turned my entire group of friends into superheroes, and these two characters were my & ~sojourn78's characters. (My hair was really short back then!) This is the Steel Q-Tip being romanced by kilted, leather-clad Gayorg the Conqueror. The Steel Q-Tip was the sidekick of one of my other friends, the story's heroine, Cottonball.
Anyway, this was for a five or six step class project. This was step one I think: black and white drawing with foreground, middle ground, background, and each step the image was increasingly abstracted. I tried coloring it with half-tone dots to give it an old comic feel, but I think they're too small and I failed.
I think the half-tone thing does sort of work. I mean it does have an old comic feel to it. Maybe not an authentic old comic feel... but if I just sit here and look at it without thinking too much, that's the impression I get.
And aside from all that it's just a great image. Lots of nice touches, like the candles and the skyline, which really enhance the scene. Evidently you already had a really good sense of mood and atmosphere

That's not a bad look though!
