A while back, I was invited to a figure drawing group that meets Friday mornings. Since The Dreamer ate up my days, nights, weekends and basically life, I never had the time to go. Since I brought Julie on as a colorist... my life is surprisingly normal. I work 8 hour days, and I don't work weekends. It's insane. I feel guilty a lot, though I know I shouldn't....
For a long time I've been wanting to spend more time life drawing but, again, no time. With this new, strangely open schedule I found myself thinking about it again, remembered the standing invitation to this group and decided to do it.
Today was the first day I went, and I haven't done figure drawing like this in at least 8 or 9 years! It was fun... I felt rusty, but I had a good time.
These are a mix of 10 and 20 minute poses, some done in graphite, some color pencil.
Life drawing is always so magical - a real breath of fresh air! I don't think it matters how much you love your own style, sometimes you just need to doodle outside the box. I always do okay on models' figures, but my faces...oy! It looks like you really enjoyed yourself - keep up the great work!
I can really see you loosening up with the drawing. It looks great.
Even though I do comics and work mostly in pencil, I like to do my life drawing in a variety of different materials to work with flow and speed. One of my current favourites is using a china marker. How long are your poses usually?
I find it interesting that you use the blue pencil, any particular reason for that?
I trained as an animator, so I started drawing with a non-photo blue pencil when I was high school. This is the first time I figure drew in 8 or 9 years, so I just blocked in the basic shapes first with my blue line since it's way less committal.
I thought as much! I do a lot of life drawing at the animation college and they do the same. I like how it immediately shows process when you go over it with pencil.
8 or 9 years? I was intimidated when I went back to life drawing after two. I admire you! Getting back into it can be sooo frustrating.
It was fun! Over the last few years I've really been trying to get over fear and embarrassment. No, it wasn't a perfect session, but if I don't start up again now, when will I?
Great gallery.
