I did this as a follow up piece to my last deviation. [link] The Doctors Warren are characters in my webcomic The Dreamer (a time travel romantic adventure story set in the Revolutionary War). [link]

This is only the second time I've ever attempted to draw Joseph Warren, since there is a surviving portrait of his [link] I've been intimidated to take a stab at him. (Well, that and the fact that he's my favorite Revolutionary War hero.) I just got back from a week in Boston where I visited all the surviving sites pertaining to him, and spent a day in the Massachusetts Historical Society researching through his ledgers and manuscripts, held the Psalm book in my (ungloved!) hands that had been in his waistcoat when he was killed at Bunker Hill, and got to hold the Bunker Hill sword that has been attributed to him. (Though that is questioned by historians.)

Anyway, I am lucky enough to have been befriended by Dr. Warren's latest biographer, who was able to measure one of Dr. Warren's waistcoats. He was significantly thinner than his portrait suggests, though making him fashionably round for a portrait during that era isn't entirely unheard of. So in this drawing I tried to put a few more edges into his face--since his actual portrait is very round and structureless.

Hopefully it looks enough like him to be faithful to the real man, and yet work within the boundaries of the style I've already established in The Dreamer.

He makes an appearance in the next issue of The Dreamer (Issue #14) in a series of flashback scenes that go back before his heroic death at Bunker Hill.

Hello! I'm a native Bay Stater and live about 40 miles from Boston ... Dr. Warren (and Lord Nelson) are my two favorite historical personages of all time. I love the likeness you did of him. I have a copy of the Copley portrait that I got from the Museum itself, hanging in our dining room ... glad you got to be so close to the surviving Warren artifacts. Given how forgotten Dr. Warren is, it cheers me to see others who are also admirers of him. Is your adventure story on Kindle? I'd like to read it. :)

It didn't? So sad. Poor Dr. Warren, he's always getting over looked!

Great job on this! I do see the resemblance to the portrait, but also how you tried to retroactively draw what he looked like in "life" (since you do imply that Copley used some artistic license of his own).

As worried as I am about the upcoming pages of the Dreamer as they pertain to Nathan (and poor Alan...), this just made me so happy. I love Joseph Warren. :XD
