I spent this past week in Boston, and on my final day I was fortunate enough to go to the Massachusetts Historical Society with a man who has a new biography on Dr. Joseph Warren coming out in October. He was kind enough to share a lot of his research with me, and together we examined more than a few manuscripts and artifacts pertaining to Dr. Warren.
One of which was his brother John's diary, where he recorded the experience of searching Bunker Hill for two days not sure if his brother was alive or not. It's a really moving, powerful entry. It's very raw... there's a lot of emotion behind it.
John Warren is a character I sketched out years ago [link] knowing eventually he'd make an appearance in my webcomic (The Dreamer): [link] Well, here we are, several years later and I finally get to draw him soon! I finished the Issue #14 script today and was so happy with it I re-read it several times... And then I was still so pleased with it, I did this sketch. Sort of an updated, more realistic sketch of Dr. John.
I guess, since he feels a little more real to me, now that I've held his diary in my hands and run my fingers over his beautiful, distinct, almost ornate handwriting. And touched several places he had signed his name, including in his brother's book of Psalms.
Ah well, it's late. I have to get to bed. Enjoy!
And if you haven't read it, check out The Dreamer. [link] My Revolutionary War, time-travel romantic adventure story. Huzzah!
I am very, very excited about meeting him in your comic at last!
And very, very jealous that you got to read his diary. How A-MAZE-ING must that be??
And very, very happy to hear about this book coming out, because I've been wanting to learn more about the Warrens of the revolution and this sounds like it will be a good place to start, yes?
Lovely art as always! I do like this style... how 'bout one of these for the entire Dreamer cast?

- Faith (The Other Faith)
But I did *paint* Al, Bea, and Nathan pretty realistically. Does that count? [link]
p.s. Yeah, it was pretty amazing. If it hadn't happened to me, I'd be jealous of myself...!
I look forward to seeing him in the webcomic!
