I've been slacking on DeviantART lately. I apologize. I haven't had much time to doodle, and it seems pointless to just repost art here that is in my comic...

Fortunately I had to design all new characters for Issue #14! A lot of them I had already designed but never posted, so look out for some new faces to pop up over here as I get to it.

I thought this was an appropriate one to start with, since this woman, Mary Stevens Warren, shows up for the first time in my comic today! [link]

According to a biography on her son John that his grandson Edward wrote, she "was naturally of a strong mind, firm in religious faith, and stern and unyielding in her sense of duty... She was kind-hearted to children, and her elder grandchildren always referred with delight to their visits at her house, especially on the annual Thanksgiving, when she devoted herself to their enjoyment. Until she was eighty years old, she always prepared the dishes for her table for these festivals, with her own hands; and was not satisfied after her guests had done full honor to her good cheer, unless she could load them with dainties to carry away."

I love that portrait of her! She married late (for the time) in life, and was the granddaughter of the man who stood up against the Salem Witch trials. I picture her as a blend of strong and firm, and soft and compassionate, and not afraid to do what is right over what is expected. Sort of like her famous son, Dr. Joseph Warren.

She lost her husband when her youngest son, John, was only two years old. He was a farmer, and fell out of one of his apple trees and broke his neck. She had four boys to raise on her own, though the oldest Joseph, went off to Harvard just a few months after his father died. He was 14.

I had the pleasure of "meeting" Mary Warren this summer when I went to the family plot in Forest Hills to visit her two famous sons. I was so excited to find her there also! and pay my respects.

In my comic, Mary Warren adopts Alan Warren after his father is killed in the French & Indian War and raises him as her own.

Dude, I want her to be my grandma. =D I don't know which I love more, the description or the sketch. <3

Also, did you get the note I sent you? I had a question about the Comics creator donation wallpaper. =)

She looks like the type who would love and comfort you and give you milk and cookies when you needed it. And scold and make a fuss because she loves you and wants to keep you in line. The person who has a welcoming cheerful smile and open arms who you almost always want to be embraced by. Who you always look forward to seeing and can't wait for the next visit.

I really like how you've illustrated her. She has a warm and inviting look and a cheerful expression.

What an amazing woman. That is a wonderful word-portrait that Edward wrote, I would love to be remembered that way. Another woman to add to my list of women I want to be like.
