18th Century Fan Girl by comic-chic 18th Century Fan Girl by comic-chic
So the *HistoryFashionLovers club is having a "Born in the Wrong Century" contest, where you're supposed to draw what you would be doing if you were born in the *right* century. Okay, I'll be honest, I love the 18th Century, but we horribly romanticize the past and I actually believe that I was born in the right century. (Am I going to get kicked out of the club??) Cause... I really, really appreciate things like being able to vote, have a career, own property, and, uh, wear pants without being tried as a witch! :XD: Not to mention how much I appreciate things like the end of small pox, polio, slavery, the reform of prisons and the treatment of the mentally ill, etc, etc, etc. (I will concede that the Constitution was so much purer back then..!)

In any event, the premise of the contest is fun, so you know, my answer of course is THE LATE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY AMERICA, HUZZAH! And what would I be doing? Well, fan girling Thomas Jefferson, of course! :XD: Background photo is manipulated from an image from Monticello.org. (Oh, and all you TJ lovers out there, we so need this: [link] )

I have no photos of my own from inside Monticello, because they only allow you to photograph the outside. So... I had to lift one from their website. That's what they get for their silly prohibitions! :XD: I used Stephen Dillane as my TJ model because he's doing such a bang-up, delicious job as Thomas Jefferson on the John Adams mini-series.

Well, today is my birthday, so I went to Starbucks and drew two completely silly pieces I had been wanting to find time to do for a long time. This is the first one, the second I'll post whenever I have time to color it...

Jefferson is lucky the internet didn't exist then. His facebook page would probably crash from all the friend requests and what not.

I tell you what, I sure can relate to this theme! I’m thirteen years old, and I wear a pocket watch, like to design steam powered engines and vehicles, wish I was in the land of cotton, have trouble communicating with other people, (when I do, they usually ask why I use such big words) have a t-shirt with the date: February 17th 1864 on it, and have model a model of the CSS H.L. Hunley in my room! Do I feel comfortable in the 21st century? Hell, no! (And I’m not kidding either. Everything I just stated is 100% true.)

It seems that with each passing day I find myself becoming ever the more bitter with my current disposition. I'm not sure you understand the gravity of the situation. If only you could have seen my designs! Oh, how they hearken back to a time when invention was based on the sharpness of the mind rather than simple discovery. When science was a matter of thinking rather than knowing. I often feel as though someone has unforgivably wronged me by casting me into this horrible time to stumble about aimlessly, where my talents are useless and my mindset is outdated. Just think how great I could have been if only I was born in the right century! I'm an inventor, who's inventions are the useless manifestations of a bygone era! AAAAAAAAGGH!!!!

I think there have always been girls who obsess over someone (usually fictional). Although I don't think they were as infamous or well known back then as they are today.

SQUEE! ;) I visited Monticello when I was thirteen, and it started my obsession. I can't remember too much details (so much to take in), so I'm dying to go agian one day. Not sure if we went upstairs, but probably not. Please tell us all about it! Maybe...just maybe, they'll let you take pics?

What I really want to see is the room Martha Jefferson might have died in.
